| Call for Applications ___ The International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy 2010: "Culture, Globalization, and International Relations over the next Two Decades" (Berlin, May 23rd – 30th, 2010) Dear Friends & Colleagues, On behalf of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, I am writing to you to announce the details of the next International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy 2010. The ICD’s International Symposium is one of the world’s leading conferences in the fields of cultural studies and international relations. Held annually in Berlin, the event will bring together prominent figures from the fields of international politics, academia, arts, culture, and civil society (to be found below) to speak to an interdisciplinary audience on a variety of important issues and challenges relating to international politics and culture. We are currently accepting applications to attend the Symposium, and I would be grateful if you could share the announcement with any individuals who you feel may be interested. Further details about the event can be found at our website: www.icd-internationalsymposium.org Symposium Agenda The International Symposium 2010 will be split into three complementary parts. The program will begin by looking in greater detail at “culture” and “identity” and how these terms are used and understood today. During this part of the program participants will have the opportunity to experience Berlin’s famous "Carnival of Cultures". The second part of the program will build on these components by considering the role that culture plays in contemporary international relations and the process of globalization. During these three days the concepts of “cultural diplomacy” and “soft power” will also be explored in more detail. The final part of the program will apply these discussions to one of the key issues that will determine global politics over the coming years – Afghanistan and stability in Central Asia. The Symposium will be split into the following three parts: "Defining and Understanding Culture in an International Context" (23rd - 25th May) more » A Three Piece Puzzle - "The Relationship between Culture, International Relations and Globalization" (26th - 27th May) more » "Understanding Afghanistan and Central Asia: Supporting Democracy and Stability - The Path Ahead" (28th - 30th May) more » This final part is being held in cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the German Marshal Fund (GMFUS), UNESCO, the European Commission, the US State Department and in partnership with leading international organizations. Social Activities There will be a number of social events taking place during the International Symposium, which we hope you will be able to join us for, such as: Berlin’s Carnival of Cultures (23rd May 2010 14:00) On the opening day of the International Symposium, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience Berlin’s renowned “Carnival of Cultures”: an annual event held to showcase and celebrate Berlin’s cultural diversity. With over 4,000 artists performing, and more than 1 million spectators, the parade through Kreuzberg can be compared with London’s Nothing Hill Carnival and is the highlights of Berlin’s cultural calendar. (more) "Strength in Song": Live Concert by Marcia Barrett Lead Singer of Boney M (Wednesday, 26th May, 20:00) The world renowned singer Marcia Barrett (lead singer of Boney M), will speak on the power of music to cross boundaries, reflecting on her experiences in Northern Ireland, Russia, and Georgia. Following her speech Ms. Barrett will perform a live acoustic concert of her greatest hits for the Symposium participants, speakers, and invited guests from Berlin’s political and diplomatic communities. In this regard, the ICD is welcoming participants of the International Symposium to submit papers on this subject. The papers can cover any topic within these fields, according to your own particular interests and passions. Participants can submit work that they have completed in the past for other purposes, ongoing research or a paper written specifically for the International Symposium.
