Sicbay's Nick Sakes is a cult hero to enthusiasts of underground Midwestern noise rock. He played guitar and sang for Dazzling Killmen and Colossamite, both well-respected acts who toured extensively and released multiple records on the Skin Graft label. Sicbay's sound combines the dissonance and rhythmic experimentation of Sakes' previous projects with a new focus on melody and concise songs.

Following in the footsteps of their hometown heroes Hüsker Dü and likeminded debasers the Pixies, the members of Minneapolis' Sicbay take pop hooks and mangle them into guitar insanity. The band's second album, Overreaction Time, starts off with "Herculaneum," a song with a title and spiraling intensity that would do Black Francis proud, crossing straight-up punk rock with the noise of Jawbox. But Nick Sakes and company are also given to prog-y experimentation, like on the rambling "Smoke Stains," and it lends the album a dynamic vibe. "Meet the Jinx" is like some dark, lost track from SST's heyday, and "Jack Pine" is one fierce slab of post-punk surf rock. Overreaction Time may initially have listeners digging out their old Pixies records, but by a few songs in, the album solidifies Sicbay as a seriously demented and unstoppable band in its own right.

One of the Midwest's hardest-hitting bands of the mid-'90s, the Dazzling Killmen never lived up to the critical success of their appropriately named second album, Face of Collapse. Although the album, released in February 1994, was dubbed the "number one heavy record of the decade" by Alternative Press, it marked the beginning of the end for the St. Louis-based quartet, which disbanded shortly before a planned tour of Japan.

Dazzling Killmen made some extremely intense and unique rock music in the early '90s and Face of Collapse is the high point in their brief discography. Their sound clearly draws on hardcore punk, but the funky, jazz fusion-influenced rhythm section, comprised of Darin Gray (an accomplished solo performer who has collaborated with Loren Mazzacane Connors) on bass and Blake Fleming (who went on to play in Laddio Bolocko) on drums, and the creepy, almost gothic guitar interplay of Nick Sakes (now of Sicbay) and Tim Garrigan almost make Face of Collapse into a prog rock record, albeit a bludgeoning one. Songs like "Staring Contest" and "Agitator" hurtle forward with driving, odd time rhythms and violent guitar stabs, while the epic, ten-plus-minute "In the Face of Collapse" builds more ominously to a torrential payoff. The vocals of Nick Sakes range from an anguished screech to a creepy spoken-word delivery and his dark, oblique lyrics add to the overall mood of dread. Face of Collapse is a milestone for underground extreme rock in the '90s and should be experienced by fans of everything from Slint to the Dillinger Escape Plan to Rush.
