"Hey, what ya listening to?" "Oh, just some Israeli shoegaze." Describing Vaadat Charigim ("Exceptions Committee" in Hebrew) to a friend can make you feel like a "Portlandia" walk-on, but there's no getting around it—they're from Tel Aviv, and their Burger debut The World is Well Lost (out November 12) bears the unmistakeable influence of Ride and My Bloody Valentine. That being said, there are about as many words of discernible English on any of the mbv songs as there are on The World's opener "Odisea." The message can be Babelfished, and the medium is seven minutes of phased guitars, tidal dynamics and post-punk monotone vocals—so there really is no language barrier if you've got an ear for what the dark grey moods this music is typically suggesting.
