Nach den Thread, was man gerade hört, kommt nun ein Thread zu dem, was man gerade liest.
Beim Musik-Thread stand, dass die Albumsangabe nicht fehlen sollte. Hier wäre eine Angabe über den Inhalt ganz gut, also ein Link zu Wikipedia oder zu den Bewertungen bei Amazon, damit jemand, der nicht vor hat das Buch zu lesen, eine ungefähre Vorstellung bekommt.

Nach meiner ersten Einschätzung gehöre ich zu den Naturtalenten, die der Herr in seinem Buch erwähnt...

The Alchemist is no smooth read. Speaking in terms of the book it evolves the reader from lead to gold and tries to teach the philosophy of alchemists in a very simple manner. Coelho wants to awaken the passion in people, which don't much reflect on themselves, to pursue their dreams. The book is full of metaphors and worldly wisdom:
* Live your dreams (listen to your heart)
* don't fear what is beyond
* don't fear to give up what you have
* the way is never gonna be easy, although the universe conspires in helping you
The title could as well be: "How to be an Optimist"

Even though it has a beginning and an end, it feels kinda unfinished and "rocky". There could be a bit more of a beautiful story in between the teaching. Also, he explains that sometimes you have to believe in the impossible (turn yourself into wind) in order to achieve your goals. Well, guess weighing alternatives and their consequences would be a better approach.

I would definitely recommend it to people that Coelho supposed to read it (e.g., which have spent their whole lives in front of the TV). Optimists will know all that already


Keine Lust das noch auf Deutsch zu uebersetzen. Bin aber mal gespannt, was ihr ueber den Alchemisten sagt. Vor allem weil er ueberall so hoch gerated ist.

The Grand Design aims at explaining physics from the early time (classic physics) over the emergence of Quantum Theory up until now where the M-Theory dominates current research in physics. Hawking and Mlodinow explain that difficult journey without numbers and calculations but in understandable words. Thus, sometimes it seems inevitable to get into details and repeat difficult parts.

Newton founded the mathematics of the real world by writing down formulas that describe the gravitational force. From then on mankind has been looking for a unified model that describe our universe and can even predict future events. A startling statement is that everything doesn't have a single history but all possible histories. The slit experiment shows that one particle travels all possible paths through all slits. The book explains that even time has a beginning (big bang) and it is out of question to ask what came before because we also don't ask what on earth is further south than the south pole.

What about the role of God in science? As Einstein put it, God does not play dice. How come, we are now able to see such a perfect universe where a slight manipulation of universal constants would have our universe collapse into itself? It is because all universes are bubbles in a boiling pot of water. Some will make it into steam others will collapse before. Since we are, we can observe. Science is a way to explain our world without the existence of a deity that decides the undetermined (no matter if there is such an entity or not).

The Grand Design is extremely thought-provoking and at every cocktail party gives you a head-start in every lively discussion about quantum mechanics and the M-Theory.

The Little Prince is literally not out of this world. It is a children's book about the uniqueness of a friendship, about an always inquiring little prince and about the loneliness and absurdness of adulthood -- those adults are always too self-absorbed.

Our prince lives on his own little planet with its three vulcanos and a little flower. He wants to get to know the world and travels to other planets. Then he ends up on earth speaking to a crash-landed airman, demanding a drawing of a sheep, which would eat the bad baobabs but not his lovely flower. The little prince is always asking a lot but never answers any questions, thereby, seeking the truth adults ceased to understand.

It's a beautiful story with multiple layers. The more carefully you read and reflect, the more layers you will find and eventually understand. Nevertheless it is a great children's book which ends in its own unique way. Must-read-classic.
